BMI Calculator
- BMI is short for Body Mass Index.
- BMI can be used to evaluate an individual’s weight status in relation to height.
- BMI is the most widely used diagnostic tool to identify whether a person is underweight, overweight or obese.
- BMI is a common method of tracking weight problems and obesity.
How BMI is calculated (depending on the measurement units):
BMI= weight (lb) / [height (in)]2 x 703
BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]2
Calculate your BMI
The BMI threshold:
<18.5 = Underweight
18.5-24.9= Normal weight
25-29.9= Overweight
30 or more = Obesity
You should seek medical attention if your BMI is more than 25 and you have high blood pressure, dyslipidemia, or adult-onset diabetes. Remember that BMI is not an accurate measurement. They are relative and should only serve as a guide and not as an absolute measurement. BMI can be misleading if a person is very muscular or very tall, or if the person is a child or adolescent. People are built differently and the method does not distinguish between fat and muscle, nor if you are a man or a woman.
