Because the olfactory nerve (the nerve that detects smell and odor) is located at the roof of the nose, just below a part of the brain known as the limbic system, smells have a direct effect on the brain and can therefore affect mood.

The Limbic System is a part of the brain that is in charge of controlling emotions and retrieving learned memories.   • Lavender (Lavendula angostifolia) – Lavender essential oil has been shown clinically to reduce anxiety and depression and aid insomnia both orally and through inhalation. Lavender aromatherapy was seen to show decreased perception of pain as well.

Aromatherapy for depression is a safe, non-invasive and natural way to help ease mild depression, anxiety and even sleep disturbances.
